California Data Collection

Project Description:

IRD provided equipment, maintenance, software maintenance, and on-call service for their statewide network of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) systems at approximately 200 locations. Most recently provided was a high speed WIM and verification system for a new Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility (CVEF) in Solano County.

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) WIM systems provide 24 hour traffic information at key locations on California highways. The information collected includes a vehicle’s axle weights and gross weight, axle spacing, vehicle classification, and speed data. The information gathered is essential for pavement studies, highway monitoring and capacity studies, accident rate calculations, and analysis of truck transport practices.

IRD’s expertise and experience in WIM Data Collection field allows Caltrans to receive a complete package of products and services from one vendor.

IRD has deployed over 500 lanes of traffic data collection systems using Weigh-in-Motion in California.
