Data Collection
Data Collection is a method for gathering and storing information. Agencies actively collect data to obtain information to monitor and control roadways. Effective long-term planning data banks provide statistical information for highway departments and alert planners to long and short term traffic load trends. Data Collection systems provide speed, traffic volume, congestion, vehicle type, and vehicle weight reports. With the assistance of IRD’s Traffic Data Collection systems, information can effectively be gathered as inputs for safe and smooth flowing roadways. IRD offers the following data collection technologies:
Low Profile Bending Plate® WIM (ASTM 1318-00 Type I WIM): The IRD Bending Plate® WIM weigh pads utilize strain gauge weighing elements to detect and weigh wheel/axle loads in each of two (2) low profile scales installed in a lane. The system consists of two (2) steel frames (per lane) which are installed into existing or new asphalt or concrete pavement with weigh pads bolted to the installation frame.

Piezoelectric Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) (ASTM 1318-00 Type II WIM): The Class 1 Piezoelectric (piezo) Sensor consists of a piezoelectric element, encapsulated in extruded aluminium housing. These sensors are easily installed in a small slot in any (existing or new) asphalt or concrete pavement with epoxy. The sensors are available in a variety of sensor lengths and cable lead lengths. Piezoelectric sensors are used for high-speed WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) and/or vehicle classification applications.
Single Load Cell (SLC) WIM (ASTM 1318-00 Type III WIM): The IRD Single Load Cell WIM weigh pads are a self contained weighing unit, with the weighing element consisting of a single load cell. The scale mechanism incorporates patented load transfer torque tubes which effectively transfer all loading on the weighing surface to the load cell, which is mounted centrally in the scale. The system consists of two (2) steel frames (per lane) which are installed into existing or new asphalt or concrete pavement, and weigh pads which are bolted to the installation frame.

Kistler Quartz WIM (ASTM 1318-00 Type I WIM): The Quartz Sensor utilizes quartz crystal force sensing technology. It consists of an aluminium alloy profile in the middle of which quartz disks are fitted under pre-load. The sensor is isolated from side forces by a special elastic material. These sensors are easily installed flush with the surface of any existing or new asphalt or concrete pavement surface with epoxy adhesive. The sensors are available in 0.75 meter and 1.00 meter sensor lengths and various cable lead lengths. Four (4) sensing elements are used per 12 foot travel lane. The surfaces of these sensors are ground to conform to the pavement profile.
Quartz sensors are used for medium and high-speed Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) and/or vehicle classification applications.

Traffic Counting/Classifying System: The IRD Traffic Counting/Classifying System classifies by length, speed and type. The system provides both raw and binned data and is extracted using a laptop PC. Applications for the system include flow patterns, traffic volume and peak periods, platoon dispersion, and speed studies.
