Project Description: In 1991, IRD was contracted to design and install ramp sorting systems at Troutville and Stephens City to pre-sort commercial vehicle traffic prior to the weigh station facility. Troutville has a unique double threshold bending plate system using two bending plate WIM, instead of one WIM, to pre-sort commercial vehicles. Stephens City has a more advanced system using IRD Single Load Cell WIM technology combined with AVI to obtain and relay information to the commercial vehicle. Stephens City has recently been upgraded to be incorporated into the CVISN program.
With the successful implementation of IRD’s pre-sorting system at Troutville and Stephens City, IRD has since been contracted to install a mainline sorting system on both sides of the Suffolk, Carson, Alberta and Bland weigh stations. IRD weigh station systems are integrated with PrePass, a national commercial vehicle pre-clearance program operated by ACS for Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate (HELP) Incorporated. Under the HELP-PrePass program trucks that are registered in the program are automatically identified, their safety and other credentials are verified and the IRD weigh-in-motion system confirms weight compliance at highway speeds. The system allows compliant trucks to by-pass equipped stations.
Most recently, IRD has worked with the State of Virginia to interface the vehicle records obtained at each weight enforcement facility with CVISN, a national truck safety database. IRD has a continuing maintenance agreement to maintain all the systems.
