Project Description: IRD designed, built and supplied a ramp sorter system near the municipality of Salinas in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

The Salinas Weigh Station can be broken into two (2) major sub-systems. The first is the WIM system located on the ramp. The WIM system gathers the data from the inroad scale and sensors as well as the overhead detectors and the camera. This data is then forwarded to the station computer which is the center of the second sub-system.

The station system determines the direction a vehicle should take (report or bypass). This determination is based on the data collected, the compliance and classification scheme used and the system settings and is referred to as the “sort decision”. Once the sort decision has been made the system informs the drivers of the correct lane to take via the use of the lane control signals (LCS) and lane directional signals (LDS). The station system also interfaces to the static scale and the variable message sign (VMS) and has a back-up detection feature described later in the manual. The station system includes the operator interface via a terminal as well as a manual console for overriding the system when the electronics are unavailable.
