Project Description: In 2003, IRD was awarded a contract from Ideal Road Builders (IRB) in Mumbai, India to supply and install 50 lanes of IRD's new iTOLL Toll Collection System at five (5) Toll plazas for the Mumbai Entry Points Project (MEP). Each plaza consists of approximately 10 lanes of a post classification toll auditing system, a plaza computer, a smart card system, a video capture system, and software.
The system does not include a central administration server, however, the plazas have ISDN transmit and receive information to a customer’s computer. The system uses the IRD iTOLL software and the Lane Interface Unit / OEM PC with Windows XP OS. It features automated payment using smart card and barcode tickets, and the new IRD iTOLL video incident detection system.
In the system, the toll rate is based upon vehicle class, and is typically paid upon entrance to the toll highway system either manually or through a smart card system. The proposed toll system utilizes axle sensors and computer technology to classify vehicles at a toll booth and charge the required toll.
