For this project IRD designed, developed, supplied and installed a Remote Control Weigh Station (RCWS)—the first of its kind in Canada. The project was a coordinated effort between IRD and the Provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta. The RCWS allows monitoring and weighing of vehicles from a remote location through an Internet link.
The Macklin RCWS features an inspection station complete with static scale on Highway 14, along with four monitoring stations located on the four highways adjacent to the inspection station. The system tracks commercial vehicle traffic through the monitoring stations and displays information on each vehicle that shows if the vehicles are in violation of weight limits. When vehicles report to the inspection station, the remote scale operator can view a video image of the vehicle as it enters the station, direct and command the vehicle operator through a set of changeable message signs, weigh the vehicle, inspect any documentation required through a video monitor, and speak with the driver through a voice communications link.Back to Projects
