Lane Merger (Work Zone Safety System)

Every year almost 800 fatalities and over 37,000 serious injury crashes occur in work zones in the United States. The dynamic work zone safety system promotes smooth traffic flow leading into a work zone by creating a dynamic no passing zone upstream of the construction site. Intelligent monitoring is used to adapt the length of the zone to changing traffic congestion levels so that it is always properly sized and relevant to the actual driving conditions. This deters vehicles from attempting to get ahead in the line by changing lanes at the last possible opportunity. The system is fully portable, allowing it to move easily with the advancement of construction and to be redeployed at other construction sites.

The system typically consists of 4 or 5 trailer mounted units that can be deployed on the road shoulder approaching the work zone area. Traffic sensors detect the volumes and speeds at each monitoring site and relay a signal to an upstream unit when congestion is detected. Flashing beacons on the upstream sign are activated when the signal is received to create a no passing zone.
