IRD received a multi-site contract from the Alberta Transportation Department for the design, supply and installation of pre-clearance equipment and data hosting services. IRD supplied and installed 25 systems in 16 locations across the province.
The equipment consists of radio frequency identification (RFID) equipment to allow vehicles enrolled in the provincial Partners in Compliance (PIC) program to bypass weigh stations. Under the voluntary program, qualifying PIC carriers elect to have trucks carry an electronic identification transponder. This transponder issues a "green light" to the trucks qualified to bypass the weigh stations, saving them time and money by not having to stop.
IRD manages an on-line data system that is operated by the Province and PIC organization for management of credentials of vehicles enrolled in the program.
