Truck Rollover Advisory System
Road geometry and traffic conditions can create hazardous situations such as a sharp curve on an exit ramp from a high speed freeway. More than 10,000 truck rollovers occur annually in United States, many at locations such as this. Commercial vehicles have a higher center of gravity and experience more difficulty in decelerating rapidly than general traffic.
IRD's Truck Rollover Advisory System determines when a potential rollover condition exists based on real information such as vehicle weight, type, speed, and deceleration and road geometry including super-elevation and curvature. A targeted warning is given to trucks in a critical situation, providing an eye catching, relevant, and believable warning to the driver. Drivers are bombarded with hundreds of messages daily, but this will likely be the only one that is just for them. Testing at three FHWA prototype sites showed a complete elimination of rollover accidents over a period of more than 5 years.
