What does it mean to be a Technical Writer for IRD?

You will play a key role by preparing technical documentation ranging from operator & product support manuals, specifications and customer training packages through collaboration with our Engineering & Design teams.  Your work will have an impact by delivering content-specific documentation and technical articles which will be used throughout IRD, as well as reaching customers and the public through presentations and trade journals.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Determine the needs of end users of technical documentation
  • Study product samples and talk with product designers and developers
  • Work with technical staff to make products easier to use and thus need fewer instructions
  • Organize and write supporting documents for products
  • Use photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation, and charts that increase users’ understanding
  • Select appropriate medium for message or audience, such as manuals or online videos; electronic or hard copies
  • Standardize content across platforms and media
  • Gather usability feedback from customers, designers, and manufacturers and end-users
  • Revise documents as new issues arise
  • Prepare and organize customer-specific training packages as required
  • Deliver and present documents to the end-user if/when applicable
  • Analyze documents to maintain continuity of style and content
  • Manage updates and revisions of all technical literature
  • May be called upon to write technical articles for trade journals and/or presentations at trade conferences.
  • Generate illustrations for all of the above. Which may include taking photographs of the subjects to be illustrated, editing photographs to highlight or enhance the subject being described, and producing diagrams using graphics software.

What you will bring

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Strong attention to detail and able to write in explanatory and procedural styles for multiple audiences
  • Skilled at prioritization and multi-tasking and working towards a deadline
  • Skill in photo editing and vector graphics is essential 

Must have

  • Post-secondary education in technical communications or the documented equivalent experience
  • Established practice working in a technical writing position
  • Training or experience to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of software development, mechanical engineering and manufacturing processes is an asset
